- The "Caravan (RV)” Factor: We aren't just "tourists"; we are explorers. A huge percentage of Dutch vacationers prioritize camping (yes, the caravan is practically a national symbol). It’s all about freedom and the ability to cook our own meals, which, let's be honest, is usually a way to ensure we have our favorite Dutch coffee and snacks on hand!
- Duration: Most Dutchies aim for at least two weeks away. It’s not just a weekend trip; it’s a full reset.
The "Staggered" Summer Secret
If you’re still used to the Dutch system, you know the summer break isn't just a free-for-all. To stop the entire country from clogging up the highways toward France at the exact same time, the Netherlands splits the summer holidays into three regions: North, Central, and South. It’s a genius piece of logistical planning, though it does mean your cousin in Groningen might be back at their desk while your friend in Maastricht is just starting their tan!
And let’s not forget the "bouwvak" that legendary period where the construction industry collectively hits the "pause" button for a few weeks. Even today, many companies slow down, and you’ll find that certain neighborhoods feel a little bit quieter while everyone is off enjoying their vacation.
A Taste of Home
In the Netherlands, summer is all about de gezelligheid . It’s those spontaneous BBQs in the park, the endless hours spent on a terrace (terrasjesweer!), and the classic fietstoch, a long bike ride that always seems to end at a beautiful lake or a quiet café.
