The Netherlands: Still the World Leader in Flowers
Just Dutch Things: News, Culture and Inspiration
The Keukenhof, one of the world’s most famous flower gardens, recently closed its season after welcoming over 1.4 million visitors. The Netherlands remains the largest flower exporter in the world, proudly showcasing its global leadership in horticulture.
Why are flowers so important to the Netherlands?
The country’s rich flower-growing tradition dates back to the 17th century “Tulip Mania,” when tulips became a symbol of wealth and beauty. Thanks to its mild climate, fertile soil, and advanced greenhouse technology, the Netherlands has become the floral heart of Europe.
Today, over 70% of the world’s flower bulbs come from the Netherlands — and flowers remain one of the country’s most iconic and beloved exports.
