What is Gouda Cheese?
Gouda cheese is named after the city of Gouda, a major trading hub in the Netherlands. However, the cheese's origins are more complex. Initially known as Stolkse cheese, named after the village of Stolwijk where it was made, Gouda cheese became widely recognized after the cheese market was established in Gouda in 1540. Today, it's known for its rich heritage and delicious taste.
Types of Gouda Cheese
- Young (Mild): Aged up to 4 months, but mostly a month, creamy softer texture.
- Medium: Aged 4-6 months, more texture and stronger flavour
- Aged: 7 - 12 months, even harder cheese and with mopre intsense flavour
- Extra Old Cheese: 12 months+; crumble texture and hard cheese with sometimes crystals and most intense flavour
- Flavored Gouda Cheeses: Cheese with seeds, herbs, fruit combinad or even smoked cheeses or like smoked gouda cheese!
